Massa teams up with Glock 14 years after title loss to Hamilton

Felipe Massa is embarking on a new racing venture where he will team up with Timo Glock, the driver who inadvertently took the F1 World Championship away from him in 2008. The end of that particular title battle between Massa and Lewis Hamilton remains very memorable, with the outcome coming down to the final race of the season in Brazil.

Massa initially looked to have claimed his first championship when he crossed the line at Interlagos as the race winner, sparking jubilant celebrations amongst his family in the Ferrari garage. However, on the last lap, Hamilton passed Glock to take fifth place, and this was all that the Briton needed to become World Champion.

The incident became well-known, particularly amongst those who remember commentator James Allen exclaiming: “Is that Glock going slowly?”

Massa keen to race alongside Glock Glock was blamed by some F1 fans for causing Massa to lose the title, and has spoken of how his parents received threatening letters at their home. However, when Massa and Glock spoke about the incident in a feature for Sky Sports F1 at the Brazilian Grand Prix last year, Massa made it clear that he never believed the German driver had done this on purpose. The wet conditions had caused Glock to struggle to keep his Toyota car on track, and both drivers were shown the onboard footage of this during the interview, something that Massa had not seen before. “I never had anything against Timo,” Massa explained.

“I never thought he would have done anything against me intentionally. Anyone who understands motorsport knows that he had nothing to do in those conditions.” Now Massa has decided to team up with Glock in the Brazilian Stock Car Pro Series doubles race, held at Interlagos on 12-13 February. The pair will race for the Lubrax Podium team in the #19 Chevrolet Cruze.

Massa and Glock set for “very special weekend” Massa admits that it was something he was keen to do following his meeting with Glock last year. “I had this idea at the end of last year, after we met at the Brazilian GP,” Massa was quoted by Motorsport.com. “I shared it with my sponsors, who soon agreed. Besides what it means to form a team with Timo within the entire context of motorsport, it is clear that we are also looking for a positive result. “I am already in direct contact with him, passing on all possible information.” Glock has welcomed the opportunity to race with Massa, and says the event will be an “exciting and very special weekend”. Meanwhile, Massa poked fun at Allen’s famous commentary from the 2008 Brazilian Grand Prix by posting on Twitter: “Yes guys! That is Glock! We’re teaming up for the first race of the Stock Car season!”
